Rating: Unrated (Log) Date: March 4, 2025 Last updated: 2026-04-06
Overview
A dream from March 4, 2025 — two days after the phantom friends dream, still in the Boston period. A roguelike dungeon-crawler in which the challenge is not combat but inventory: finding the deck with the most missing cards.
Full Notes
- Roguelike card game
- Different types of decks and use it to explore deeper and deeper dungeons
- I walked deep into a place and kept going deeper and darker as well
- One of the challenges was to find out which deck had the cards missing and which decks had more cards missing
Reading
Roguelike as metaphor: Roguelike games (Slay the Spire, Hades, Balatro) are built on a specific loop: choose your tools, go deeper, face increasing difficulty, die, and start over with slightly better understanding. The dungeon is a compression of life’s escalating challenges.
The card decks: In roguelike deckbuilders, your deck is your entire strategic identity. A deck with missing cards is a deck with gaps — incomplete, weakened, missing key moves. The challenge Jack faces in the dream is not fighting monsters but diagnosing which decks are most incomplete.
This is an unusually precise dream metaphor. Jack is not being tested on strength but on diagnostics: identify the gaps, assess the damage, figure out what’s missing. It maps directly onto his startup work (finding product-market fit gaps), his customer discovery process (finding the right ICP), and his self-analysis practice (identifying failure modes and blind spots).
Deeper and darker: The dungeon goes in one direction — down and dark. Jack follows it. The dream does not show fear of the dark, just an observation of the quality of the descending experience.
Context: March 2025
The roguelike metaphor may also connect to Jack’s reading of Grokking Deep Reinforcement Learning — DRL is structurally similar to roguelike learning: agents trained through repeated failures in escalating environments, building policy improvements from deaths and near-misses.
